Maria and Kazimierz (who died in 2010) Piechotka are the most distinguished specialists in the field of Jewish architecture in Poland and Central-East Europe. The subject of their scholarship was the architecture of synagogues and the urban layout of Jewish quarters up to the 19th century, studied on a broad comparative basis and in close connection with socio-political and cultural history. Architects by proffesion, they laboured to reconstruct the appearance of synagogues. On the basis of archival photographs, often depicting no more than fragments, as well as town-plans, they succeeded in recreating layouts, sections, interiors, bimahs, architectural elements and the construction of buildings that no longer exist. Their achievment is to have rescued from oblivion the historic art of Jewish districts which were utterly destroyed during the WW II.
