Fragment / English version
Edited by Marek Goździewski, publishing coordination: Dorota Karaszewska ”If Bałka’s art, for many years, seemed driven by the need to find a way of representing the existential dillema, that being leads to nothingness, more recently the Holocaust and the artist’s preoccupation with it is increasingly evident in his work (…). Bałka has used the video camera to acces and incorporate into his work images and sounds that bring traces of the Holocaust into the gallery and thus into the present of all our lives. Among other sources he has recorded video foot-age in the concentration camps at Majdanek, Treblinka and Auschwitz-Birkenau, sometimes of specific and telling details, other times of landscapes of trees, snow and sky, of place emptied but redolent somehow with history”.
